Two new VNIS winter oilseed rape hybrids are among the top 15% on the Ukrainian market

Ukrainian seed production has made a significant breakthrough in recent years, despite the covid epidemic and the outbreak of a full-scale war. Today, Ukrainian breeders offer farmers high-quality competitive seed, which sometimes has no analogues in the world. This is discussed in the article Innovative hybrids of winter rape of Ukrainian breeding: choosing quality.

This applies, in particular, to winter rape seeds. For example, scientists at the Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Breeding (VNIS) have created Maybach and Torus hybrids using the most modern technologies.

These seeds are already being used in Ukrainian fields and have been well received by farmers who work with them. However, these hybrids still occupy only 1% of the domestic seed market. The Institute says it is ready to offer farmers at least twice as much. In general, they say, there are practically no restrictions on the production of seed.

VNIS, in addition to the main volume of seeds, can also supply elite seeds to meet the internal needs of large farms. This would allow farmers to independently control the quality of seeds by growing them on their own fields.

Ukrainian breeders have also managed to speed up the process of producing hybrids several times using modern biotechnology. This means that new innovative products will appear even more often.

- “While we used to work exclusively on productivity - yield as an integral indicator - the new winter rape hybrids, especially Maibakh and Torus, are more stable than all the previous ones,” says Myroslav Pariy, PhD, breeder, co-owner of VNIS. “We are pleased with the test results, as they show that in eight points of our research, these two new products are among the top 15% of the best hybrids available on the Ukrainian market by all indicators.

Ukrainian hybrids from VNIS also have significant advantages in logistics, as their delivery to the farm is cheaper and faster than seeds from abroad. In addition, Ukrainian varieties are generally cheaper than foreign-bred seeds.
